Why I Love Homemade Cookie Mixes
- Save time & cleanup: Having everything pre-measured prevents you from having to get out all the ingredients & dirty dishes every time you're craving cookies!
- Tastier than premade! With these, you get all the flavors of homemade cookies without the work.
- Personalize: DIY cookie mixes allow you to customize your cookies according to your taste preferences, whether it's adding M&M's, extra chocolate chips, nuts, or other ingredients like gluten-free flour.
Ingredient Notes & Substitutions
- Granulated & Brown sugar: You can use light or dark brown sugar (I used dark for the cookies above!).
- Baking soda, baking powder, and salt
- All-purpose flour: You can also use your favorite gluten-free flour to make this gluten-free. My favorite brand is Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free 1-to-1 Baking Flour.
- Chocolate chips: You can use any mix-ins you want! Dark chocolate chips, peanut butter chocolate chisp, and m&m's are some of my faves! If you use all chocolate chips, I highly suggest chopping or pulsing half of the chips so that you get a bakery-style look & texture.
- To bake mix, you'll need: Melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract. This recipe uses melted butter, so no mixer is needed! You can use salted or unsalted butter for these, I just don't recommend using margarine or the dough will be too soupy.
How to Make DIY Cookie Mixes:
Next time you're baking cookies, grab a few ziploc bags and make some extra for next time - it's so quick & easy!
Step 1: Write Instructions on Bag or Print Tags
If you're planning to write the instructions on the bag (instead of using my printable tags), I suggest writing it on before filling since it's easier to write when it's completely flat.
On the bag, write: "Add: 1 egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and ½ cup (1 stick) melted butter. Roll into 2-tablespoon balls, gently flatten, and bake at 350°F 8-10 minutes."

Step 2: Add Dry Ingredients
Add dry ingredients to a quart-sized bag: light brown sugar (½ cup), granulated sugar (¼ cup), baking soda (¼ teaspoon), baking powder (¼ teaspoon), and salt (¼ teaspoon), all-purpose flour (1¼ cups), chocolate chips (½ whole and ½ cup chopped).
Tip: For easy filling, fold the top of the bag down a few inches, then add the sugars first as they will hold down the bag.
Gifting Idea: Wrap in Parchment
For a more giftable presentation, wrap each bag in parchment paper and tie off with a string and instruction tag. These are great for gifting new parents, college students, or to give as holiday gifts!
Mix-In Ideas
- Chocolate Chips (semi-sweet, dark, milk, or white)
- Baking chips (peanut butter, butterscotch, toffee)
- Chopped Nuts (walnuts, pecans, almonds, peanuts)
- Dried Fruits (raisins, cranberries, apricots, cherries)
- Candy Pieces (M&M's, Reese's Pieces, chopped candy bars, caramel bits)

These are my absolute favorite cookies now! The consistency is perfect. I made mine with Ghirardelli peppermint bark and added a tsp of peppermint hot cocoa powder. All 12 were gone in 2 days!!!

Melissa says
I haven't done it but it sounds like it would work!
Crystal says
I can’t wait to try these. They look very easy. All of my cookie recipes make dozens at a time. I would like to make these into gifts and I am curious if anyone has put these in a mason jar. If so, what size jar would work for the amount of ingredients?
Melissa says
You would likely need a quart jar for this! It may have a little extra room inside, but a pint would probably be too small.
Cyndi Mead says
I can’t wait to try these. Thank you
Maranda says
Wonderful recipe. I recommend cooling the butter. My M&Ms melted... looked a mess but tasted great! The first batch didn't make it a hour..
Melissa says
Thank you so much for leaving a review, Maranda! I definitely agree it's important to let the butter cool a little straight out of the microwave! Glad you enjoyed the recipe!

Heather S says
Pretty good 😋 My only suggestion is to make sure the melted butter is cool first….otherwise your chocolate chips melt a little 😆🫠
