French toast sticks are a homemade breakfast idea that is kid-friendly, fun to make, and perfect for storing in the freezer for quick on-the-go mornings!
Today I'm sharing with you a fun step-by-step tutorial to show you just how easy making homemade french toast sticks can be! With a few pieces of Texas toast and some ingredients you probably already have on hand, you can recreate these store-bought treats at home!
To me, these taste about 100x better than the ones we used to get at Sam's Club (which always seemed to be slightly freezer burned after one of us wouldn't tie the bag back up properly). Soft on the inside, with a slightly crispy texture on the outside. Perfectly dunkable and oh so good.
What You Need to Make Homemade French Toast Sticks:
- Thick-cut slices of Texas toast (this is in the bread aisle & usually bagged like a normal loaf of bread, but thicker)
- Eggs
- Milk
- Cinnamon & Sugar
- Butter
- Vanilla
How to Make French Toast Sticks:
- Cut the Texas toast in 3 even pieces. I suggest using a serrated edge knife and gently cutting through.
- Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and sugar together in a shallow pan. Loaf pans work great for this.
- Quickly dip each side of the bread (and the edges) into the mixture, being sure to only let it sit on each side for about 1 second. You do not want to leave it in the egg mixture longer than that or it will get soggy.
- After coating, place each strip on a wire rack as they await cooking.
- Heat a large skillet to medium heat and add butter. Depending on the size of your pan, cook about 6 strips at a time until each side is golden brown (about 1-2 minutes).
- Immediately after removing the strips from the pan, place the strips on a baking sheet and place in the hot oven for 10 minutes. This step is not mandatory, but one I prefer as it allows the strips to get a little more crispy.
Tip: You may need to add more butter to the pan between batches to prevent from sticking.
Last step - eat! Remove from the oven and serve with syrup, strawberries, or whipped cream (you can basically take your favorite waffle toppings and go to town with whatever you like). I like to serve them with small cups of syrup to allow for dunking, but you can also eat with a fork.

You sure can! Once cooled, place the french toast sticks on a baking sheet or plate and place in freezer. Once frozen and hard, transfer to a plastic freezer bag or container and freeze. When ready to enjoy, remove from freezer and microwave for 30-60 seconds.

Without a doubt, thick sliced Texas toast is the best bread for french toast sticks. It will allow you to have crispy french toast sticks without being soggy. You can find Texas toast in the regular grocery aisle with all the other bagged breads. It basically looks like a normal loaf of sandwich bread when packaged, but is cut into thicker strips.
Can you make french toast sticks with regular bread?
I do not recommend using regular sandwich bread to make french toast sticks. It will be soggy and likely to break when dipping/flipping.

Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425℉.
- Using a sharp serrated edge knife, cut each slice of thick-cut texas toast bread into 3 strips (4 thick-cut slices of Texas toast* total).
- In a large bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs, ½ cup milk, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon granulated sugar, and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract for about 30 seconds until everything is incorporated.
- Dip each slice of bread into the mixture, coating all sides with the egg mixture. Do not allow the bread to soak in the mixture, or you will have soggy bread. Tap off the excess mixture and place each strip on a wire rack to prepare for cooking.
- Heat a large skillet to medium heat and add 1 tablespoon butter. Cook 6 strips at a time until each side is golden brown (usually about 1-2 minutes). You may need to add more butter to the pan between batches to prevent from sticking.
- Immediately after removing the strips from the pan, place the strips on a baking sheet and place in the hot oven for 10 minutes. This step is not mandatory, but one I prefer as it allows the strips to get a little more crispy.
- Serve with maple syrup and enjoy!
