Why I Love These Easy Football Brownies:

  1. Easy to decorate: These cute football brownies are easy to decorate, but look cute as can be! You can even make them extra delicious by adding on a layer of easy brownie frosting.
  2. Perfect for game day! Whether you’re looking for superbowl treats or just little league snacks, these football brownies are quick to whip up in a pinch.
  3. Convenient: I use two boxes of Ghiradelli’s triple chocolate brownies to make sure they are thick and fudgy but you can use whatever boxed mix you want! You could also use my double chocolate chip cookie bars or cosmic brownie recipe to make them homemade!

Ingredients & Tools:

  • Boxed Brownie Mix (or homemade!): I use two boxes of the Ghiradelli Triple Chocolate to make sure these brownies were thick and fudgy. While you could make these with thinner brownies, they’ll be more prone to breaking.
  • Vanilla Frosting: Use your favorite homemade or vanilla canned frosting to pipe the football laces on your brownies.
  • Circle cookie cutter: To achieve the football shape for these brownies, cut 2.5-inch circles and then slightly offset the circle cutter to trim off the top. While you can use a small cup or wine glass, having a sharp edge (I use a biscuit cutter) will give you the cleanest cut.

Make it gluten-free! Use your favorite gluten-free boxed brownie mix to make this gluten-free! If making a homemade brownie, my favorite brand is Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free 1-to-1 Baking Flour.

How to Make Mini Football Brownies:

Step 1: Bake & Cool Brownies

Make your brownies according to the package instructions and bake in a parchment-lined 9×13″ pan (I used two boxes of brownie mix to make them thick). The parchment paper will allow you to lift or flip the brownies out of the pan, which will make them easier to cut without breaking.

Tip: Using two boxes of brownie mix will make them thicker and be less prone to breaking as you cut them into shapes.

Step 2: Cut into football shape

Allow your brownies to come to room temperature, then lift or flip them out of the pan (using a parchment sling will help you easily remove them!).

To achieve your football shape, cut your brownies into 2.5-inch circles. Using that same circle cutter, trim off the tops to create your football shape.

Step 3: Add white lines

Using your favorite homemade white frosting or canned frosting, pipe the football laces onto your brownies. Start with one line down the center, followed by 3 vertical lines.

Tip: Don’t worry if you don’t have a piping bag and tips! Use a Ziploc bag and snip the edge off to easily pipe your lines.

Tips & Storage

  • Make it giant! Don’t want to cut individual shapes? Bake a 9×13″ pan of brownies, top with chocolate frosting (optional), then cut it into a football shape and pipe on the lines!
  • Storing: Store these brownies in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Be careful when storing to not smear your icing.
  • Freezing: I don’t recommend freezing these brownies after they have been frosted. If you need to make them ahead of time, freeze the pan of brownies, thaw to room temperature, then cut and frost.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I use a different brand of brownie mix?

Yes! Ghiradelli triple chocolate is one of my favorite boxed brownie mixes but you can use the mix of your choice! Make sure that you still use 2 boxes to bake the same amount of brownies.

Do I have to have a piping bag to decorate my brownies?

No piping bag is needed to decorate your brownies. Place your canned frosting in a Ziploc bag and snip one corner off to create a piping bag.

How do you cut a football shape?

To achieve your football shape, cut your brownies into 2.5-inch circles. Using that same circle cutter, trim off the tops to create your football shape. Refer to my photo reference in the post above! If you want to make these football brownies without a cookie cutter, you can also use a champagne glass or any sharp-edged cylinder from your pantry.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven according to instructions on the box.

  2. Grease and line a 9×13" pan with parchment paper. Prepare and bake brownies according to box directions; if you're using two mixes you will need to bake for longer than the instructions on the box.

Allow to cool to room temperature.

  3. Lift or flip brownies out of pan to make them easier to cut.

  4. Cut brownies into 2½ inch circles. To achieve the football shape, trim off the top to create more of an oval shape (see photo references above).

  5. Using a piping bag or Ziploc bag with the corner snipped off, pipe the white laces on each mini football.
